Endometrial Scratch

What Is An Endometrial Scratch

An endometrial scratch is a simple procedure offered to patients who have experienced unsuccessful IVF treatment using good quality embryos. The procedure involves passing a thin catheter through the cervix and “scratching” the endometrium (the lining of the womb) in an attempt to improve the implantation rate of the embryos. The theory behind the endometrial scratch is that it induces a “repair reaction” within the womb, which stimulates growth factors and increases the chances of pregnancy. The evidence available with respect to the effectiveness of the scratch in relation to IVF outcomes is not firmly established.

It takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to perform the procedure and is similar to a cervical smear test. Patients are advised to take pain medication prior to the appointment.

Endometriosis is a very common condition where cells of the lining of the womb (the endometrium) are found elsewhere, usually in the pelvis and around the womb, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

It mainly affects women during their reproductive years. It can affect women from every social group and ethnicity.

Endometriosis is not an infection and it is not contagious. Endometriosis is not cancer.
